Anguilla Island is the pearl of the Caribbean

Anguilla Island is located on the border of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and together with the islands of Scrub, Dog and Sombrero forms a local group that is part of the Lesser Antilles. The name of the island was given by the Spanish and can be translated as “eel”. To the west of it, 320 kilometers away, lies Puerto Rico, as well as the Virgin Islands. Together with Martinique, Dominica and St. Lucia, Anguilla forms a “garland” of coral islands stretching from north to south to the coast of Venezuela.

Hot tropical climate, sandy beaches, emerald ocean waters and inexpressible local color have made the island of Anguilla a place of pilgrimage for tourists wishing to bask under the rays of the bright Caribbean sun, experiencing all the delights of beach recreation at first-class resorts on the island!

A lost paradise

The island of Anguilla was originally inhabited by the Arawaks, a South American Indian tribe who practiced fishing and cotton cultivation. When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, they displaced the local tribes and took over some of the population. However, they did not stay long on the island, which had no natural resources. A century later, the British made Anguilla their colony, bringing black slaves from the African continent and began growing sugar cane. In the 18th century there were armed clashes between the French and the British on the island, in addition, the archipelago was favored by corsairs, who made comfortable anchorages for their ships in quiet bays.

In 1967 the island of Anguilla together with other territories received internal self-government, and in February 1969 its inhabitants voted for independence from Great Britain. Now the island is its overseas possession, not part of the territory of the metropolis.

The tropical climate of the overseas territory

Anguilla is governed by a governor. Foreign policy and defense matters are handled by Great Britain. The island has an area of just over 90 km2, with another 10 km2 of land on the islands of Dog, Sombrero, Scrub and 15 small atolls scattered across the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. The population of the archipelago is about 14,000 people. They are mostly descendants of Africans, who were brought here by the British and Spaniards 400 years ago. The whole territory of the archipelago is divided into 14 districts, and the largest settlement on Anguilla and at the same time the capital is Valli – a small town in the central part of the island. The local currency – the Eastern Caribbean dollar – is used along with US dollars, so tourists will have no problems with exchange and settlements.
The climate of the island is hot, tropical. The temperature can reach +37 C° in the summer months. Storms and hurricanes occur then, but they quickly subside. Ocean trade winds blow from the northeast, which bring coolness to these parts, and the most precipitation falls in the period from September to November – 950 mm. The most favorable time for a beach vacation in Anguilla are considered the winter months.

Nature of the coral island

The sandy soils are rather poor in nutrients, so farming is poorly developed on the island. The terrain is mostly flat, with the highest point being Crocus Hill Cliff (65 meters), located in the northern part of Anguilla. Vegetation consists of low shrubs and sprawling palms in coastal areas. The coastline abounds with quiet lagoons with sandy beaches and azure waters, which makes a vacation in these places truly fabulous.
Tourism is the main source of income for local residents, and the island authorities have made every effort to create the necessary infrastructure to attract vacationers: luxury hotels, fashionable resorts, private beaches with swimming pools, excellent conditions for exploring the life of underwater inhabitants of coral islands – a luxury vacation of premium class!

Island resort

Tourists can get to Anguilla from the neighboring island of St. Maarten, as the local airport does not accept large planes. The main town – Valli – is also a balneological resort. Thanks to the healing mineral springs of the salt lakes concentrated on its territory, people flock here every year wishing to improve their health, and at the same time to relax on the amazing sandy beaches of the island: Rendezvous Bay and Mandy Bay. Rains are rare here and the sun shines brightly almost all year round. Fans of exoticism can experience the spirit of the Caribbean in the fishing village of Island Harbor in the northeast of the island.

In the fashionable hotels of West End Village, Cap Jalaka and Sandy Ground, located near the coast, tourists will enjoy luxury services: comfortable suites, spas, private beaches and picturesque lagoons, exquisite sea delicacies in local restaurants – relaxation and bliss bordering on nirvana.

Anguilla is an island paradise in the Caribbean!
